These pests prefer warm areas like inside ductwork, along baseboards, or in hotel linen closets. The carpet beetle life cycle starts with white eggs that are smaller than a grain of salt. They usually hatch in one to two weeks. They then become carpet beetle larvae. Carpet beetle larvae are carrot-shaped and between one-eighth to a quarter-inch long.
This destructive stage lasts from a few months to two years, during which they molt several times. When a carpet beetle reaches the end of its carpet beetle larval stage, it pupates in its final skin.
Carpet beetles larvae can reach up to 0. They have an oval shape and depending on the type of the beetle , their appearance can vary. The black carpet beetle larvae differentiate from brown to black colour and are not covered with bristles. The furniture carpet beetle larvae are white but during growth, they change their colour into red and also have brownish strips across the body.
The larvae can be found indoors and outdoors, as well. Inside, they hide in places where they can easily access food such as hair, dandruff, dead skin and dead insects. This means they can damage leather books, carpets and rugs, stuffed animals and furs.
Outside, the larvae can thrive in nests where they provide food like hair or bird feathers. Carpet beetle larvae are not known to possess any serious health dangers but can irritate the skin because of the bristles.
The next stage is when larvae grow into pupae. Depending on the conditions and mostly the temperature this pupal stage can last between two and three weeks. During this period the larvae hibernate and develop in a cocoon that is white in colour. Usually, carpet beetles pupae emerge into adults during the spring and summer seasons. The pupal stage happens near the larval source of food. Do carpet beetles die in the winter? As they graze along the surface of susceptible materials, they often leave threadbare spots and irregular holes.
As noted earlier, carpet beetle larvae feed on animal-based materials, especially wool, felt, fur, silk, feathers and leather. Commonly attacked items include sweaters, scarves, coats, blankets, rugs, down pillows and comforters, upholstery, toys, decorative items, and taxidermy mounts. The larvae often feed within fabric folds hems, collars, cuffs, etc.
Clothing and blankets in regular use are seldom attacked; the same is true of rugs that are routinely vacuumed. Edges and undersides of rugs and carpets are more likely to be infested than areas out in the open.
Carpet beetles can also thrive on lint, hair, and debris accumulating under baseboards and inside floor vents and ducts. The pests can also proliferate on bird nests, animal carcasses, and dead insects cluster flies, lady beetles, stink bugs, wasps, etc. Unlike clothes moths, some varieties of carpet beetle will also infest seeds, cereals, pet food, and other plant-based materials. Because of this diverse diet, the pests may be found virtually anywhere in homes, often making elimination a challenge.
Preventing Infestations. As with clothes moths, the best way to avoid problems with carpet beetles is prevention. Woolens and other susceptible items should be dry-cleaned or laundered before being stored for long periods. Cleaning kills any eggs or larvae that may be present, and removes perspiration odors that tend to attract pests.
Articles to be stored should then be packed in tight-fitting plastic bags or containers. Householders intending to use moth balls, flakes or crystals should carefully read and follow label directions. The volatile, odiferous products containing naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene can be hazardous if used incorrectly. Never scatter them in open closets or other areas where children or pets can reach them. The vapors are only effective in deterring fabric pests if maintained at sufficient concentrations.
Effective concentrations can best be achieved by sealing susceptible items with the specified dosage of balls, flakes or crystals in large plastic bags within tight-fitting trunks, totes, or boxes.
