Disease transmission. There is no single recognised cause of amphibian spawn failure. Spawn failure in amphibians is not a feature of infection with ranavirus or chytrid fungus.
In Great Britain, reports of amphibian spawn failure are sporadic and usually affect individual sites at any one time. Risk to human health. No known risk to human health. Risk to domestic animal health. No known risk to domestic animal health. Frog spawn is laid in clumps in shallow water whereas toad spawn is laid in strings, usually wrapped around vegetation in slightly deeper water.
Newt eggs are usually found individually wrapped in vegetation. These differences can be used to determine whether frog, toad or newt spawn has been affected see Figures 2- 4.
These nocturnal wanderings can take them across busy roads where sadly many are killed. You may even spot a toad crossing road sign on your journeys. But those who survive the journey make it to ponds where the real action begins. In clear ponds, you can see several balls of toads — all limbs and eyes, like a fantasy monster.
Sometimes, the males become so engrossed in battling each other that some drown, unable to reach the surface to breathe. The tadpoles behave differently to those of frogs too — swimming in shoals rather than individually. Toad tadpoles are also unpalatable to fish, unlike their froggy relatives.

At least one of the shallower edges should taper off into surrounding rough, moist vegetation such as a leafy mulch which will offer them food, shelter and hibernation.
Although frogs require shelter from the heat of the summer sun, make sure this isn't provided by too many overhanging trees in the garden as ponds need direct sunlight to thrive properly. A good mixture of native pond plants is essential. Try water violets and marsh marigolds which are easy to grow and thrive in ponds. A mix of marginal and floating pond plants are ideal as this provides shelter for frogs, toads and newts.
Newts lay their eggs from spring to summer and need rafting pond plants with small leaves - the female will lay her eggs on the underside of a submerged leaf and wrap the egg up in it. Making a wetland in your garden or community space can be easy, inexpensive, and brings many benefits to people and wildlife.
