My current years car has been filling up with PC fuel right from the beginning and CEL has come on for the last few years and indicated as a cat problem. I used to fill up Shell in the car before this one and everything was OK. Start to think it has something to do with PC brand gas as it is indicated on the manual also.
The compound primarily responsible for this double whammy is Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl MMT — the main additive used to enhance octane levels in fuel. The use of MMT — sometimes also referred with its portmanteau, Metal — as an octane enhancer has been debated in the automotive industry and scientific community almost right from its inceptions in the s.
Automobile manufacturers, for instance, have long argued that the manganese atoms in MMT, during the combustion process, form solid manganese oxide particles, which when accumulated on the engine and the surface of the exhaust system, can cause a variety of problems, including but not limited to increased spark plug fouling, catalyst plugging, exhaust valve leakage and impairment of the on-board diagnostics system.
Such claims have time and again been substantiated by studies but MMT continues to remain a staple in the gasoline industry's assortment of fuel additives.
The other, far more concerning factor of MMT usage in fuels is the manganese emissions it leads to, which in turn can create serious complications of health. Upon human contact, studies have showed that these manganese particles could build up in the brain and cause a neurodegenerative disorder known as manganism. The threat of such emissions can be further aided by the fact that MMT is long suspected to cause the vehicle emission system to malfunction.
In addition to the threat MMT poses to vehicle longevity and human health, its emission of hydrocarbons also contributes to the formation of smogs — a severe form of air pollution. All of this by no means is brand new information as environmental experts, healthcare officials and automakers have pointed their concerns in many a studies.
There is a concern that the use of manganese additives in gasoline could increase inhaled manganese exposures. After completing a risk evaluation on the use of MMT in gasoline, EPA was unable, based on the available data, to determine if there is a risk to the public health from exposure to emissions of MMT gasoline. The Agency stated "Although it is not possible based on the present information to conclude whether specific adverse health effects will be associated with manganese exposures in the vicinity of or exceeding the [estimated safe level over a lifetime of exposure], neither is it possible to conclude that adverse health effects will not be associated with such exposures.
More specifically, modeling indicates that, as a result of MMT use in unleaded gasoline, certain portions of the population may be exposed to levels in the same range as the Reference Concentration RfC or safe level for a lifetime exposure with an order of magnitude uncertainty.
Because the expected exposure is not much higher or much lower than the RfC, a definitive conclusion about risk is impossible to reach. Long-term animal testing and exposure research are needed to more accurately define the risk. Under Clean Air Act authority to require testing of motor fuels and additives, EPA has required the Afton Corporation to perform testing to help fill data gaps and provide information that potentially would result in a more definitive risk evaluation.
Directions: Add entire bottle to nearly empty gasoline tank. What does Top Tier gas mean? Top Tier is a performance standard for gasoline, backed by major automakers. To be considered Top Tier, the gasoline must have a higher concentration of detergent added to it. Is Marathon Top Tier gas? Marathon gasoline fights the accumulation of harmful deposits and improves the performance of your vehicle's engine. Choosing Marathon gasoline will help to: Optimize fuel economy.
What is modern money? Modern Monetary Theory or Modern Money Theory MMT is a heterodox macroeconomic theory that describes currency as a public monopoly for the government and unemployment as evidence that a currency monopolist is overly restricting the supply of the financial assets needed to pay taxes and satisfy savings desires. Which gas is ethanol free? The short answer is, no, ethanol-free gasoline is not bad for your car. Is premium gas ethanol free? Some people fill their small engines with premium gas based on the mistaken notion that all premium gas is ethanol free or that it'll help the engine run better.
In fact, 95 percent of all gas sold in the United States regular, mid-grade and premium contains ethanol.
